In the UK, drones available from January 2023 must fall into manufacturer standards class C0 to C6.
Existing drones currently operating in the UK or available before January 2023 (known as Legacy Drones) are split into different classes depending on their specific features, abilities and characteristics.
<250g drones
Drones that can operate in Open A1, A2 and A3 categories and Specific Categories. Drone pilots must be registered with the CAA if the drone has a camera fitted and is not classed as a ‘toy’.
250g-500g drones
Drones that can operate in Open A3 and Specific Categories. The drone pilot must hold a ‘Certificate of Competency Certificate (GVC or NQE Qualification) and be registered with the CAA.
500g-2kg+ drones
Drones that can operate in Open A3 and Specific Categories. The drone pilot must hold a ‘Certificate of Competency Certificate (GVC or NQE Qualification) and be registered with the CAA.
