Site – HMNB Clyde, Faslane, Scotland

Client – Ministry of Defence (MOD)

Description of works – Corrosion Treatment, Structural Maintenance, Safety Systems Installation

We recently completed a highly sensitive and technically complex maintenance project at one of the UK’s most strategically important defence installations—HM Naval Base Clyde in Faslane, home to the UK’s nuclear submarine fleet.

This project demonstrated Balmore’s commitment to delivering engineering excellence and safety-focused infrastructure support for critical national assets.

Working within the demanding confines of a nuclear military base, our team carried out a comprehensive programme of corrosion treatment, structural maintenance and the installation of safety-critical fall protection systems. Every aspect of this project required meticulous planning, execution under strict safety protocols, and close collaboration with military personnel and facility managers to ensure minimal disruption to ongoing operations.

HMNB Clyde, more commonly known as Faslane, is a cornerstone of the UK’s national defence, acting as the primary base for the Royal Navy’s nuclear deterrent. The security, operational readiness and longevity of the infrastructure at this facility are non-negotiable. Every element of its upkeep must meet the highest standards of precision and reliability, making it an environment that demands nothing less than industry-leading expertise.

The Ministry of Defence (MOD) required an experienced contractor with the specialist knowledge and operational discipline to execute a high-stakes infrastructure programme without compromising site security or safety. Balmore was selected for our proven track record in complex maintenance and our capability to deliver tailored solutions in high-risk, high-security environments.

Project Scope

The project had two principal components:

Corrosion Treatment and Maintenance Repairs

Installation of Man-Safe Fall Protection Systems

Challenges and Solutions

High-Security Environment

Operating within a live nuclear base presents unique logistical and operational challenges. All personnel required advanced security clearance, and work areas were subject to constant surveillance and access restrictions.

Balmore’s team underwent rigorous security vetting and followed strict protocols for equipment handling, communication, and site access. Daily coordination with MOD site management ensured that all work aligned with security procedures without delay.

Environmental and Structural Sensitivities

The harsh coastal environment of Faslane, combined with the structural demands of supporting heavy-duty military infrastructure, meant that corrosion was a significant threat to operational longevity.

We deployed specialist corrosion engineers who performed a detailed condition survey before treatment. Using industrial-grade rust inhibitors, environmentally compliant coatings, and advanced surface preparation techniques, we ensured that treated components met the strictest MOD durability and performance expectations.

Working at Height and Safety Risks

Maintenance teams were required to operate in elevated and difficult-to-access areas. The need for safe ongoing maintenance also made permanent fall protection systems a necessity.

We designed and installed custom man-safe fall protection systems, including horizontal lifelines and anchor points, with full testing and certification. These systems now allow future maintenance teams to work safely and efficiently, significantly reducing risk.

Results and Impact

The completion of this project has had a measurable impact on the facility:

All treated and repaired systems are now in optimal condition to support day-to-day and emergency operations, reducing the risk of unplanned downtime.

Through expert corrosion management, the structural integrity of key infrastructure has been preserved, lowering future maintenance costs and extending the usable life of the facility’s assets.

The new man-safe systems provide MOD personnel and contractors with industry-approved fall protection, ensuring safe access for future inspection and repair tasks.
