Site – Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, Glasgow
Client – NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde
Description of works – Rope Access Maintenance, DOFF Steam Cleaning, Structural Support Replacement
The Queen Elizabeth University Hospital (QUEH) in Glasgow is not only one of the most advanced healthcare facilities in the UK, it is also the largest hospital in Europe.
As a vital hub for emergency, inpatient and outpatient services, any maintenance work on the estate requires an approach that is non-invasive, highly efficient and safety-focused.
The Balmore Group was selected to undertake critical maintenance and industrial cleaning during a planned two-week hospital shutdown; a narrow operational window in which essential services had to be carried out with zero disruption to hospital operations.
Why The Balmore Group Was Chosen
With over 40 years of experience working at height across Scotland’s most complex industrial and commercial sites, we are recognised as one of the UK’s leading rope access maintenance providers.
We were perfectly placed to deliver this project due our unique understanding of the requirements of live hospital sites. From infection control measures to the importance of minimal noise, dust and disruption.
We specialise in high-level access solutions, enabling efficient completion of work in difficult-to-reach areas without the need for intrusive scaffolding or powered access systems. And as a fully accredited DOFF Cleaning Service Provider, (an eco-friendly, non-abrasive cleaning method ideally suited for delicate or sensitive building materials), our team was able to clean structural fixtures within a healthcare setting more effectively.
With a workforce capable of sustaining dayshift, backshift, nightshift and weekend operations, we successfully coordinated continuous cover throughout the shutdown period.
Scope of Works
The project focused on essential structural and mechanical support maintenance across the QUEH campus. All works were delivered under tight time constraints, with an unwavering commitment to health & safety, precision and NHS compliance.
Key tasks included:
• Complete Replacement of All Galvanised Pipe Supports.
• DOFF Steam Cleaning of Structural Fixtures, Fittings & Supports
• Rope Access Inspections and Reporting
• Zero Operational Disruption to Hospital Staff or Patients
Challenges Overcome
Working on such a vast and sensitive site presented several logistical and operational challenges. To accommodate hospital workflows, certain zones were only accessible during specific periods. Our shift-based strategy allowed us to adapt and continue work around the clock.
Our rope access systems provided the agility and precision needed to work in confined or awkward locations where conventional access methods would have failed or caused disruption. As specialist NHS contractors, we implemented site-specific RAMS (Risk Assessments and Method Statements), adhered to infection control protocols, and ensured all technicians followed stringent safety measures.
Project Outcome
Despite the tight deadline and complexity of the environment, our team successfully completed all works ahead of schedule and to a standard that exceeded client expectations. This project highlights our ability to deliver high-level access solutions in critical environments, backed by an experienced workforce and specialist equipment. As a go-to provider for rope access maintenance, we are perfectly placed to offer these specialised services inhouse and to a high standard.
Whether it’s cleaning high-level façades, replacing external pipe supports or delivering reactive repairs at height, our multi-disciplinary team is ready to respond quickly, safely and with absolute precision.
