Description of works – DOFF Steam Cleaning
Our Rope Access Services team was tasked with cleaning the exterior of the Scottish Power building, located in the heart of Glasgow City Centre. Already a well known new addition to the Glasgow landscape, the buildings exterior required an efficient and safe cleaning solution that would not disrupt the daily operations of the area or the building’s employees. Using our specialised rope access team and advanced DOFF Steam Cleaning technology, we were able to complete the job quickly, cost-effectively, and with minimal disruption.
Project Challenges
The Scottish Power building posed significant height challenges, making traditional cleaning methods like scaffolding and access platforms impractical or overly costly. Given the central location and high traffic in the surrounding area, it was important to use a cleaning method that was environmentally friendly and would not create excess waste or run-off which is why we used DOFF Steam Cleaning Services to complete the work. DOFF Steam Cleaning is a highly efficient method of stonework cleaning that uses superheated water to gently remove dirt, grime, moss, and algae without damaging the building’s exterior. This cleaning method is effective across different surfaces, including stone and brick, and uses no harmful chemicals, making it an environmentally responsible choice.
Our rope access team provided the agility and flexibility to access all parts of the building’s exterior, even in hard-to-reach areas that would have been difficult or impossible to clean using conventional scaffolding or access platforms.
Why DOFF Steam Cleaning?
The DOFF system cleans surfaces without causing damage, using steam at temperatures up to 150°C. This method is particularly effective for removing biological growth like algae, moss, and fungi, as well as pollution stains, without the use of harsh chemicals. Since the DOFF system only uses water, it is a sustainable cleaning method that minimises environmental impact, an important factor for the Scottish Power building.
Because traditional access methods including scaffolding is not only time-consuming to set up but also significantly more expensive compared to rope access, our trained rope access services team were chosen to complete the work. With reduced setup time and reduced overall costs, rope access services offers businesses a more affordable solution for at height building maintenance. Scaffolding can also block entrances, reduce available street space and be a general nuisance for both the building occupants and the public. Rope access services on the other hand require minimal ground space and leave no obstruction to pedestrian or vehicular traffic.
Access platforms often have height restrictions that can hinder work on taller buildings whereas rope access services allows our building maintenance team to reach any height with ease, ensuring the entire façade can be cleaned, even at difficult-to-reach locations.
Rope access is a highly regulated and safe method of working at height. Our team of trained and certified technicians ensures that all work is conducted with the highest standards of safety, both for themselves and the public.
Project Outcome
The DOFF Steam Cleaning work on the Scottish Power building was completed efficiently, with all grime, algae, and pollutants removed, leaving the façade looking as good as new. The use of rope access ensured that the project was completed on time and within budget, without causing any disruption to the building’s daily operations or the surrounding area.
The combination of DOFF Steam Cleaning and rope access proved to be the perfect solution for the Scottish Power building.
