Project Objectives

The primary goals of this project were:

• To safely inspect the full external fabric and roof areas without the need for scaffolding or intrusive access.
• To collect high-resolution photographic and video data to identify areas of degradation, defects, and potential maintenance risks.
• To ensure zero disruption to hospital operations, including coordination with on-site services and air traffic.
• To integrate all survey findings into a digital, cloud-based reporting platform for the estates management team.

Methodology

Using CAA-authorised UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) platforms, our drone inspection team conducted multiple flights across the hospital’s extensive roof areas and external façades. Prior to deployment, comprehensive flight planning and risk assessments were carried out in collaboration with hospital management and aviation control authorities to ensure full compliance with air safety regulations.

The hospital’s proximity to active helicopter routes required careful coordination to avoid interference with medical air traffic. All flights were scheduled within agreed windows and controlled under strict safety protocols, guaranteeing zero disruption to hospital operations.

The drones captured high-resolution still images and 4K video data, providing a detailed visual record of the roof coverings, guttering, masonry, and cladding systems. This method allowed for the detection of wear, water ingress points, loose materials, and other structural issues without the time, cost, or risk associated with traditional inspection methods such as scaffolding or cherry pickers.

Data Analysis and Reporting

Following data capture, all imagery and findings were processed using our cloud-based survey software, a powerful digital platform that integrates with Google Earth. This system enabled the estates team to view, interact with, and analyse defect data mapped directly onto the hospital’s building model.

Each area of concern was tagged, annotated, and categorised by priority, creating a clear and accessible visual dashboard for decision-makers. This approach transformed what would normally be a static inspection report into an interactive asset management tool, supporting informed decision-making for both immediate and long-term maintenance planning.

The cloud-based system also facilitates real-time collaboration between our engineers, NHS estates staff, and maintenance contractors — ensuring that recommendations can be swiftly actioned and progress can be tracked seamlessly.

Follow-On Works

As part of The Balmore Group’s integrated service offering, our rope access specialists were immediately available to conduct follow-on make-safe repairs and remedial works identified during the drone survey.
